Iowa One Call Round Table Discussion

Recently, the Iowa One Call System teamed with the Iowa Section of ASCE to plan a forum to advance their efforts in conflict avoidance and damage prevention earlier in project development.  Iowa One Call hopes to become more “engineer friendly,” so the Iowa Section will be hosting round table discussions to get input from engineers, contractors, and utility company representatives.  Forums are tentatively scheduled in Eastern Iowa during March and Central Iowa during April.  The Iowa Section has asked the Nebraska Section Younger Member Group  to assist in hosting a third round table in Western Iowa during May.  Facilitator opening remarks and handouts will be provided by Iowa One Call, but the host responsibilities include finding a venue, advertising the event, and providing refreshments.  The Younger Members would like to offer the opportunity to help plan this event to any member of the Nebraska Section.  If you are interested in helping, please contact Marie. Your help will be greatly appreciated, as the event cannot take place without volunteers!

The award is to recognize those employers who encourage ASCE membership, allow time off for professional development, support and encourage professional and technical growth, encourage young engineers to prepare articles for publication, and/or assist in the payment of dues.  Several companies will be recognized for their support of YMs; in addition, one company will be singled out for the Superior Employer Recognition Award.  Last year, Lamp Rynearson and Associates was selected for this honor.  For more information, see the nomination form. Younger Member Leadership Symposium - Annual Conference 2004

In October 2004, the Younger Member Leadership Symposium convened in Baltimore, MD. The Nebraska Section YMG was represented by Marie Maly (YM Chair) and Peggy Meyers (Section Newsletter Editor).  The Symposium included a workshop on team building, sessions on managing change, becoming a "trusted advisor" - not just a designer, and more.  In addition, we shared ideas for activities/projects and spent some time getting to know National officers like Dennis Martenson, the President-Elect.

Marie also attended the Committee on Younger Members meeting prior to the YMLS.  She is now a Corresponding Member to the committee.  Topics of discussion there ranged from YM involvement in governance restructuring to working with student chapters (and the Committee on Student Affairs) and a new strategic plan for CYM.  Responsibilities of Corresponding Members include submitting articles for publication in the Younger Member Newsletter and relaying concerns from the sections & branches.  If you have any ideas for articles or concerns that may be of importance on a National level, contact Marie.

Zone III Younger Member Council 2004

In February 2004, the Zone III Younger Member Council met in Chicago, IL, in conjunction with the Section & Branch Leadership workshop and the Student Chapter Leaders workshop. During the Younger Member Council, we heard from speakers on Public Speaking, Leadership, and Technical Writing.  We discussed a resolution on the proposed governance changes and the location for the 2006 Zone III Council, but determined that we did not have enough information at this point to support a specific redistricting plan at this point.  We did pass a resolution with a suggested location for the 2006 Zone III YMC - Houston.  Click here to see the information presented to the YMC on the proposed governance.  If you have any questions or would like to hear more about the sessions, email Marie.  Next year's Zone III YMC will be in St. Louis.

Younger Member Leadership Symposium - Annual Conference 2003

In November 2003, the Younger Member Leadership Symposium was held in Nashville, TN. The Nebraska Section YMG was represented by Marie Maly (YM co-chair) and Peggy Meyers (Section Newsletter Editor).  Sessions were held on a variety of topics, including Leadership/Management, Changes in the Workplace, Ethics, Technical Marketing, Networking, and Building Credibilty & Trust.  Younger Members from 24 sections or branches were in attendance, so a lot of ideas were shared over the three days.  Next year's YMLS will be in Baltimore.

Proposed Governance Changes

Use the link above to see any of the information provided to the Sections and Younger Member Groups at various conferences and workshops.  Ballots were due to ASCE by mid-August, but the information will be left on the website until updated information is provided.

2004 - Employer Recognition

The Committee on Younger Members (CYM) is seeking nominations for the 2004 Employer Recognition Award. The award is to recognize those employers who encourage ASCE membership, allow time off for professional development, support and encourage professional and technical growth, encourage young engineers to prepare articles for publication, and/or assist in the payment of dues. For more information, see the nomination form. The national submission deadline is August 1, 2004, but nominations must be submitted through the Nebraska Section, so please send them (no email since you have to sign the form) to Marie or Lindsay by July 12, 2004!  Please consider nominating your employer - we would love the opportunity to recognize employer support for ASCE in Nebraska.

*** 2004 Mead Ethics Contest ***

This year, the Nebraska Section Younger Members Group submitted a paper for the Mead Contest.  It was written by Rick Kaufmann (Section Webmaster and District 16 Delegate).  This year's topic was "Is it ethical for Engineers to hold political positions while practicing engineering?"  Read Rick's paper here.  Rick recently found out that he was selected as the Zone III and National Younger Member winner of the contest.  He has been invited to present his paper at the 2004 ASCE Annual Conference & Expo, which will be held this October in Baltimore.

2004 Mead Ethics Contest

The Mead Ethics contest is a competition open to Student Members and Younger Members (two winners - one student and one YM). This year's topic and information is available through the national site. We are hoping that several Nebraska YMs will be interested in writing a paper for this contest so we can have our own local competition! Please let us know if you plan on writing a paper - if we have more than one, a state turn in date will be prior to the deadline for the national submission. Each section or branch is only allowed one submittal, so we have to complete the state contest with enough time to submit our winner to National.

2004 CYM Awards

The CYM Awards page lists a variety of other awards specifically for younger members. Also read the letter from CYM Chair Chris Garlic - it gives a short summary of each award. We would love to see some participation from the Nebraska Section Younger Members! Please contact us if you plan on submitting a nomination form and let us know if you have any questions or need assistance.

June 2003 - Employer Recognition

The Committee on Younger Members (CYM) is soliciting nominations for the 2003 Employer Recognition Award. The award is to recognize those employers who encourage ASCE membership of their engineers, allow time off for professional development, support and encourage professional and technical growth, encourage young engineers to prepare articles for publication, and/or assist in the payment of dues. For more information, see the nomination form. It should be noted that even though the national submission deadline is August 1, 2003, nominations must be submitted through the Nebraska Section, so please send them (no email since you have to sign the form) to Marie or Lindsay by July 15!
